FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – OCTOBER 2, 2026 – VANCOUVER, BC — Kostuik Gallery presents Beautiful Fukushima, a new body of work by award-winning British photographer Michael Kenna. The 50 sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs mark fifteen years since the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2011, and stand as a testament to Fukushima’s striking recovery in the years since. Kenna’s distinctive, contemplative photographic style casts the series as a meditation on place and memory — on what endures, what is renewed, and how landscape and human experience remain bound together over time.

The exhibition debuted in Japan earlier this fall and has since travelled through presentations across Europe and the United States, with Kostuik Gallery marking its arrival in Canada, on view October 15 through November 1, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 15, from 5 to 7pm, artist in attendance.

“I should state openly that for me, and perhaps for many others, the word Fukushima far too easily kindles dark memories of fifteen years ago,” Kenna said. “I cannot help associating the prefecture with kintsugi, the centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics by mending fractures with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. I also think of the mythological phoenix, an immortal, legendary bird that is reborn from its own ashes. Both metaphors seem appropriate for the remarkable regeneration of Fukushima.”

“We’re thrilled to be hosting Michael in Vancouver for his new collection,” said Jennifer Kostuik, owner and director of the gallery. Kenna’s work first appeared at Kostuik Gallery in a 2019 group exhibition, and Beautiful Fukushima marks his 2026 return with a dedicated solo presentation. “Fukushima is a difficult subject, but his compelling images find something hopeful in it, and I think that’s exactly what people need to see in person.”

As an internationally collected photographer, this exhibition marks the latest chapter in a body of work spanning five decades. Kenna has published 47 books of his photography, with work held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others. In 2022, France’s Minister of Culture named Kenna an Officier des Arts et des Lettres, an honour that placed his life archive — more than 3,600 original prints and an astounding 175,000 negatives spanning 43 countries — in the permanent collection of the French State.

Kenna’s photographs are known for their enigmatic stillness, largely a product of the long exposures he favours, often made at dawn or at night. “You can’t always see what’s otherwise noticeable during the day,” he has said. “With long exposures you can photograph what the human eye is incapable of seeing.” Since the mid-1980s, Kenna has worked primarily with Hasselblad medium-format and Holga cameras, which account for the square format of most of his images.

“People don’t always expect a photograph to be hand-printed by the artist himself, in his own darkroom, using the same sepia-toned silver gelatin process he’s practiced for 45 years,” Kostuik said. “It’s a traditional, non-digital medium he’s described as being in danger of becoming a lost art. Michael’s work is exquisitely crafted and reflects a sense of refinement, presenting windows of beauty and reflection, something everyone worldwide values.”

A limited-edition mini-collotype portfolio of the Fukushima series, signed by Michael Kenna, will be available for purchase at the opening event.

Beautiful Fukushima runs October 15 through November 1 at Kostuik Gallery, 1070 Homer Street, Vancouver. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 6pm; Saturday, 10am to 5pm; and Sunday, 12pm to 4pm. Follow the gallery on Instagram for exhibition updates.

ELL COMMS PRESS RELEASE: Against the Grain: Two Stages of a Career, One Shared Material

VANCOUVER, BC — SEPTEMBER 1, 2026 — Jennifer Kostuik Gallery announces Against the Grain, a duo exhibition opening September 17 and running through October 11, 2026, featuring gallery artists Marianne Lovink and Katja Zubkova. The exhibition brings together two women at very different points in their careers, both working in a medium — wood carving — that remains largely male-coded, and both proving that materiality and craft belong equally to both stages of a career.

Lovink has been carving since 1984, with public art installations across Toronto and Philadelphia and representation by Kostuik Gallery since 2000. Her decades of practice are rooted in Dutch design heritage, Modernist influence, and a meticulous, hand-carved approach to form. Zubkova, by contrast, is just beginning to build her name — she started showing with Kostuik Gallery in 2024, following a path that took her from Canada’s High-Performance Biathlon team to Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her carved wood wall sculptures, titled entirely in binary, encode her own life story into each piece.

Placed side by side, the exhibition isn’t simply a duo show — it’s a study in two different stages of a career, one artist who has paved the way and one who is on her way up, both defying expectations of who works in wood.

“Wood carving still isn’t a space people associate with women, and both of these artists are quietly changing that — one through thirty years of major public commissions, the other through a completely new visual language. I think that’s a story worth telling” says Jennifer Kostuik, owner and director of Kostuik Gallery.

Both artists describe a similar devotion to their material, even as their careers sit at opposite ends of the spectrum.jennifer kostuik, kostuik gallery, helen siwak, folioyvr, vancouver, bc, art gallery, fine arts, west coast luxury, art collectors, marianne lovink, katja zubkova

Lovink describes a similar reverence for craft and material: “I believe that the most successful artworks always incorporate some aspect of craft. In my mind the two are inextricably linked. The natural world in all its aspects is and always has been a major source of inspiration for me in life and art.”

“I am drawn to materials that already have a language of their own. Wood has movement, grain, imperfection, warmth. It has a history that existed long before I shaped it, and I want the material to remain present in my work,” says Zubkova.

Against the Grain opens with a public reception on Thursday, September 17, from 5 to 7 pm, with both artists in attendance. An artist talk will take place at 6:15 pm during the reception, offering visitors the chance to hear directly from Zubkova and Lovink about their process and the ideas behind the work. The exhibition continues at Kostuik Gallery through October 11, 2026.

ELL COMMS PRESS RELEASE: Against the Grain: Two Sculptors, Two Journeys, One Material

VANCOUVER, BC — AUGUST 24, 2026 — Jennifer Kostuik Gallery announces Against the Grain, a duo exhibition opening September 17 and running through October 11, 2026, featuring gallery artists Katja Zubkova and Marianne Lovink. Two women, two continents, and one shared material — wood — come together in an exhibition that reveals just how differently the same medium can be approached.

Zubkova, born in Russia and now based in Vancouver, treats wood like a code to be cracked. A former member of Canada’s High-Performance Biathlon team, she turned to art in 2019, and her carved wood wall sculptures — some finished in bold, saturated colour — carry titles written entirely in binary, encoding her own life story into each piece.

Lovink, by contrast, brings four decades of practice shaped by her Dutch design heritage and a career built across Toronto, Philadelphia, and now Chicago. Her meticulously carved wall sculptures and framed paper collages explore repetition, pattern, and organic form, informed by a lifelong fascination with Modernism and mark-making across cultures.

Placed side by side, the two artists’ work becomes more than a shared exhibition — it becomes a conversation between backgrounds, generations, and approaches to a single material.

“Against the Grain is exactly the kind of show I love building — two artists who couldn’t have more different starting points, brought together around one material. Katja and Marianne aren’t just exhibiting together, they’re in conversation, and that’s what makes this pairing so compelling,” says Jennifer Kostuik, owner and director of Kostuik Gallery.

For each artist, that dialogue plays out in their own words.

“I am drawn to materials that already have a language of their own. Wood has movement, grain, imperfection, warmth. It has a history that existed long before I shaped it, and I want the material to remain present in my work,” says Zubkova.

Lovink describes a similar reverence for craft and material: “I believe that the most successful artworks always incorporate some aspect of craft. In my mind the two are inextricably linked. The natural world in all its aspects is and always has been a major source of inspiration for me in life and art.”
